Dear Colleague:

NSTA has decreed Thursday, March 19, 2009 as “International Science Education Day” at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 19-22, 2009. On this date, we will hold a “conference within a conference” with the theme of: “Growing Professionally through International Opportunities: Field Experiences, Collaborations and Investigations.” In particular, science teaching and learning has become a global endeavor and this conference will focus on the wide range of international professional opportunities available to science teachers. We invite you to submit a proposal to present a paper or poster at this international event. The deadline for submitting proposals is October 24, 2008. Submission directions follow this letter.

The International Conference will be open to all registered attendees of the NSTA National Conference. Numerous opportunities for international visitors to network together and to interact with science educators from various cultures, including those from North America have been scheduled. Conference registration and hotel information is now available on the NSTA website at http://www.nsta.org/conferences.

NSTA’s International Day will commence with a continental breakfast and welcome ceremony, including a NSTA conference orientation, followed by a plenary talk by an international scholar/organization with extensive experience in providing teachers and/or students with international opportunities related to science. Following the plenary session will be concurrent sessions related to the conference theme, focusing on elementary, middle, and high school levels. A full complement of papers presented in a poster session and buffet lunch will follow. We will conclude the day with a panel discussion that will engage scholars from each of the educational levels regarding common issues that cut across grade levels. In addition, all international visitors are cordially invited to attend the NSTA International Reception in the President’s Suite on Wednesday evening, March 18.

The International Day conference recognizes NSTA’s increased emphasis on international collaboration in science education, at the direction of the NSTA Board of Directors. If you are interested in presenting during the concurrent sessions, or wish to submit a poster, please see the Conference Proposal Submission Directions following this letter. On behalf of NSTA, we look forward to your participation in this important international assembly of science educators.

Sincerely,

Page Keeley
