Dear Professor Sung-Jae Pak

Greetings from Thailand! I hope you are aware that the International Conference on Physics Education (ICPE 2009) entitled Development and Innovation in Physics Education is being organized from 18 to 24 October in Bangkok, Thailand. This conference is partially supported by IUPAP and also the Asian Physics Education Network (AsPEN). The highlights of ICPE 2009 include the AsPEN Workshop on Active Learning in Physics alongside the conference and the award of the IUPAP-ICPE Commission Medal for the year 2008 to UNESCO as an organization. Furthermore, as is practice, the IUPAP-ICPE Commission (C14) will also hold its annual meeting on the sidelines of the conference.

ICPE 2009 offers an outstanding list of keynote speakers including Eric Mazur (Harvard University), Lillian McDermott (University of Washington), Stephen Benka (Physics Today), Ton Ellermeijer (GIREP, AMSTEL), Manfred Euler (IPN), Kenneth Krane (Oregon State University), Priscilla Laws (Dickinson College), Takatoshi Murata (Kyoto University of Education), David Sokoloff (University of Oregon), Dean Zollman (Kansas State University), and many more.

ICPE 2009 primarily focuses on offering a floor for physics educators to present issues and examples which emphasize the following sub-themes as a result of efforts made during the celebration of the World Year of Physics 2005:
A. Bringing physics education into the 21st century
B. Engaging physics education to the real world
C. Developing new and effective learning approaches for physics education
D. Preparing physics education to provide solutions to global challenges

ICPE 2009 provides the opportunity for the international community to exchange ideas and develop a common vision for the future of physics education. All contributors are invited to submit their manuscript to be considered for a publication in ?AIP conference proceedings? by the American Institute of Physics. In addition, selected papers from ICPE 2009 will be invited to be published in a special issue of ?Science Asia? through a review process by highly qualified referees.

ICPE 2009 organizing committees have been working to make this event a truly unique experience for all participants. As a past member and representative of your country on the IUPAP-ICPE commission, your participation in the conference is of critical importance. We also hope that you will motivate the participant of a large contingent from Korea to ICPE 2009.

We sincerely hope that you will join us in making ICPE 2009 a success and a memorable event. We look forward to welcoming you and your collogues to Bangkok and to ICPE 2009.

Best Regards,
Boonchoat Paosawatyanyong
Conference Secretary
