The 9th International Conference for the History of Science in Science Education

Theme: "Scientific Understanding through Historical Instruments and Experiments in Formal and Non-Formal Learning Environments."

July 30th ~ August 3rd, 2012
Flensburg, Germany

Traditionally, the International Conference for the History of Science in Science Education brings together historians of science and science educators. Conference IX of this series introduces another area of science education, namely, historical instruments and experiments and their role and educational potential in alternative learning environments. A number of sessions will be conducted by scholars who are working at science museums and science centres, which are playing an increasingly important function in promoting interest in science and enabling the general public to develop an understanding of science. In consideration of the central role that these two types of institutions play in informal science education, it is vital to examine how history of science, generally, and historical instruments and experiments, specifically, contribute to furthering this educational objective. In bringing together experts from the fields of history of science and science education and from science museums and science centres, the conference will create an awareness of recent developments in this area of science education and explore new means by which science can be made attractive and interesting to diverse and broad audiences through its history.
