(3-1) A Study on Intervention Strategies of Cognitive Behavior Modification for Students with Disabilities
<Abstract>
Cognitive behavior modification is an integrated way to use both a cognitive strategy and behavior modification technique. It is also called cognitive behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral management. As the scientific methodologies of behaviorism rises in such cognitive methods as dysfunctional thoughts, expectations, and beliefs working on maladaptive behavior in behavior modification, there is a focus on inducing cognitive changes based on behavioral methods.
One of the utmost scholars representing the cognitive behavior modification theory is Ellis(rational emotive behavioral therapy; REBT), since whom Beck and Meichenbaum have developed more diverse techniques(cognitive therapy, self-claim training, self-instruction training, and anger control training) and provided new methods to the counseling and psychotherapy fields, thus making a contribution to the development of the theory. Cognitive behavior modification continues to be more and more sophisticated in theory and technique in recent years, and a cognitive behavior modification program for students with disabilities has been widely used across various topics including aggression, anger, hyperactivity, sociality, self-efficacy, and school adjustability. Many studies on cognitive behavior modification have proven its effectiveness on depression, anxiety disorder, ADHD, and eating disorder. It is now broadly used as independent therapy or assistant therapy to other therapies.
A cognitive behavior modification intervention should be carried out as a part of a total intervention program for its success and needs to properly select and use various intervention methods according to the characteristics of students with disabilities. Since students with disabilities have many difficulties with acquiring, maintaining, and generalizing intervention skills, it is necessary to instruct them according to diverse situations, people, places, and activities. It is also required to combine effective intervention methods including individualized education plans and various therapy intervention plans and take a total program approach that has been systematically constructed.
