(3-4) A Development of Sign Language Dance Program at P School

<Abstract>

Language is closely related to culture. Children have learned and used language for the culture identity. However, deaf people have their own specialized language which is sign language to think and learn(±Ç¼øȲ, 2002; ÃÖ»ó¹è, 2003). Accordingly, Deaf culture wins its cultural identity. Sign language dance is one of Deaf cultures and categorized as sign language culture(Á¤Áø¿µ, 2002). Sign language dance has been turned deaf people¡¯s emotion and intention into physical movements. It can be a way to share feelings of songs. Thanks to those of activities, deaf people can relieve psychological conflicts to strength expressiveness. Moreover, they can put efforts to develop self-efficacy and sociality.
Meanwhile, sign language dance which was taught at P school has a technique based on respiration, the most fundamental principle of dance. The program can improve movements and help to express meaningful movements in the mixture of sign language. There are two levels of sign language dance program.
First, it is a movement program to use spontaneous movements and plays. The program has details to recognize emotional expressions and body to fuel movements.
Second, the latter is to improve self-esteem and self-efficacy in the use of movements. This program applies respiration method to bring and express feelings tremendously for changing sign language into significant movements.
