The purpose of this study was to find out teachers in special class for disabilities of perceptions of the psycho-social adjustment and problem behavior of institutionalized and home reared students with disabilities by their class level, teaching career. Data were collected from the teacher of welfare facilities-dwelling students in special class for the disabled.
The questionnaires used by earlier studies were reconstructed by this researcher for use in this study. After a pilot survey was conducted and literature concerned was reviewed, the questionnaire was modified, and then it's amended again after discussing with teachers in special class. The subjects in this study were 107 teachers, who included 37 elementary school class teachers, 38 middle school class teachers, and 32 high school class teachers. Data obtained from these questionnaires were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. This major findings of this study were as follow:
First, the teachers who worked at special class considered students who resided in welfare facilities to have more inactive attitude toward school life, had fewer friends and had more frequent conflicts with their peers, compared to commuting students.
Second, the former group didn't show frequent grade-related deviant behaviors nor had a poor sense of economy. But the teachers found them to often act on impulse and had a poor achievement, and their problems behaviors, such as lying or using abusive language, were serious.
Third, the teaching career of the teachers made no difference to their outlook on psycho-social adjustment and problem behaviors among welfare facilities-dwelling students, but their perception varied according to the course they were in charge. In particular, psycho-social adjustment and problem behavior among the students were viewed more negatively by the teachers in charge of middle school course than by those in charge of elementary and high school courses.
