The Relationship Between Ninth Grade Achievement and Tenth and Eleventh Grade Science Achievement in Korea

This study was designed to examine the relationship between ninth grade achievement and tenth and eleventh grade science achievement. The influences of another variables, intelligence and aptitude, on the dependent variables were also investigated. The records of 546 highschool students were serched for the following information:ninth grade total score, Korean language, English, mathematics, general science, intelligence, and aptitude as the predictors, also tenth grade biology and chemistry and eleventh grade physics and earth science as the criterion variables.

Statistical techniques employed to analyze the data were correlation and simple and multiple linear regression analyses. General descriptive statistics for all measures was reported. Probability levels of each of the test statistics were presented. The full and restricted model were used to determine the contribution of predictor variables.

The following conclusions were drawn: 1. Among the predictor variables, ninth grade total score had the highest correlation and Korean language had the lowest correlation coefficient with the criterion variables. 2. Tenth grade criterion variables were correlated higher with the predictor variables than eleventh grade criterion variables and showed stronger intercorrelations. 3. Of the six predictors used in the full model to predict tenth grade biology and chemistry and eleventh grade physics and earth science, the predictor variables, respectively, contributed significantly according to each criterion variable.
