Greetings from AAPT National Office
Dear AAPT International Member,
I send you greetings from AAPT's world headquarters at the American Center for Physics in College park, Maryland. I say, world deliberately because we are a growing global association, non-U.S. physics educators make up 13%
of our membership. This presents us with the welcome challenge of identifying and addressing your needs. We may not have done so effectively to date, but our goal is to become more attuned to those needs and work with you to meet them.
We would like to hear from you and learn about how AAPT has been supporting you and which of our services, rograms, and products you find most valuable. Some of you shared with us previously some thoughts that are informing our ongoing planning process. We would like to keep hearing
from you (in fact, we will send your way a formal request for input in the near future). We invite you to participate in our governance and to serve on our committees. And we would like to see more of you at our annual meetings (the next one is to be held in Seattle, Washington, January 5-10, 2007 and registration is now open). I look forward to meeting those of you who will attend this upcoming joint meeting with the American Astronomical Society.
As someone who grew up overseas, I bring to AAPT an international perspective. I see great value in expanding our geographic and cultural reach as an organization. Yes, the teaching techniques, curricular approaches, and cultural settings vary across our landscapes; but what binds us is a strong passion for physics, a long tradition in teaching, and a great focus on physics education. Those are universal traits that make AAPT's mission and programs unique. There is a lot we can learn from you and we believe that we have valuable experiences to share with you as well. The international exchange of ideas will strengthen our programs and help further advance physics education.
Being an international association goes far beyond having international members. It is a mindset and an attitude that we adopt in decision making and prioritizing. Your active participation as we continue to make this transition is valuable to us. We invite you to take part in it. We are
actively exploring the establishment of international sections, the expansion of benefits programs for international members, and the possibility of holding international symposia and meetings. We urge you play a part in these activities.
On behalf of your U.S.-based colleagues, we thank you for being members of AAPT. We invite to stay active within the Association, and connected with us so we can serve you even better. Our mission of service and leadership is to advance physics teaching across the boards,a global concept that transcends political, geographic, and linguistic boundaries. Your presence among us makes that mission all the more meaningful and far-reaching.
In service of AAPT and physics education,
