The Relationship between Piagetian Cognitive Development Level as Measured by the Burney Logical Reasoning Test and Selected Scholastic Variables of Prospective Korean Secondary School Teachers
Abstract
Prediction study about the Piagetian cognitive levels of selected prospective Korean secondary school teachers was carried out.
Following seven predictor variables were used in formulating prediction equations.
(1) science achievement;
(2) field-independent/field-dependent cognitive style;
(3) intelligence quotient;
(4) age;
(5) test score of the Korean National Qualification Test for College Admission;
(6) high school grade-point average;
(7) sex.
The sample used for this study consisted of 200 freshmen (100 males and 100 females) selected randomly from the College of Natural Sciences, Chungnam National University at Korea.
Substantial percentages of the Korean prospective secondary teachers were in the cognitive level lower than formal operations. It seems to be necessary to place more emphasis on science curricular activity and to help students become field independent in their cognitive style in order to promote their cognitive development.
Prediction equations were developed to predict the Piagetian cognitive levels of the Korean prospective secondary school teachers employing readily available predictor variables.
